Rio bids farewell to the Paralympics with GB taking second place in the medals table!
Over the last two weeks' Rio has showcased 23 Paralympic sports from which GB secured a total of 147 medals. A staggering 64 medals were gold which has been the most successful since 1988 leaving GB finishing second in the medals table behind China.
Kadeena Cox took the title of flagbearer for the closing ceremony, after her historic performance this Games medalling in two sports events. Taking four medals in total, two gold, the 25-year-old became the first Briton in 28 years to win medals in two sports at the same games.
The ceremony paid tribute to the Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad, who sadly passed away on Saturday after suffering a fatal heart attack, following a crash in the C4/C5 Men's road race. Sir Philip Craven, International Paralympic Committee president reflected on the incident, “The passing of Bahman Golbarnezhad has affected us all and left the whole Paralympic movement united in grief.”
Iran's sitting volleyball team were triumphant in winning gold and dedicated their win to the cyclist.
Rio has brought out the best in Team GB with credit to Sporting Equals ambassador Ali Jawad for his great efforts claiming a Silver medal in his chosen sport. Team Gb now looks ahead to Tokyo 2020 to set a new standard to rise to the occasion once again.
