The EIS exists to deliver outstanding performance – impacting support that enables UK High Performance System sports and athletes to excel.  


The EIS is the world's leading provider of Sports Science, Medicine, Technology, and Innovation to high performance sport.  It is unlike any other organisation in high performance sport, with an unrivalled network of experts in their fields delivering people-first solutions to over 40 Olympic and Paralympic Sports.  Established in 2002, and now a wholly owned subsidiary of UK Sport, the EIS has been providing support to Olympic and Paralympic sports for almost 20 years and is now one of the largest organisations in high performance sport globally. 


At the EIS we have around 400 high performing and highly motivated staff and work in a complex environment of external stakeholder relationships. The EIS sits in a pivotal role in the UK within high performance sport. On a day-to-day basis EIS people provide outstanding support services to sports in our elite training centres. It is also at the heart of leading innovation across sport as well as being a key voice in the world of sports science and technical and medical challenges that will face our world of sport over the coming years; mental health, doping, safeguarding, concussion – to name just a few.   



The EIS in partnership with NGB's will develop the next generation of practitioners so that they become 'sport ready' and highly sought after for employment within the UK High Performance system.

This internship will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to embark on a 12 month (minimum) to 2-year programme of learning and development which includes mentorship, supervision, access to EIS CPD, and Technical Leadership. Working alongside two experienced strength and conditioning coaches, you will be part of the Olympic and Paralympic Performance Support Team at British Canoeing (Sprint), where you will be supporting world class programme athletes in their pursuit of success on the world stage. Specifically, there will be responsibility to deliver to the Academy Flatwater Programme.

At the end of this internship, you will have gained valuable experience of implementing your learning within a high-performance environment, preparing you for future roles within high performance sport.

REPORTS TO: Lead Mentor (Flatwater, Paralympic) & Senior Physical Preparation Coach (Flatwater, Olympic)

SALARY SCALES: £19,206 - 24,883 pa

GRADE: Level 1 (All Sciences) with potential to progress to Level 2e upon completion of the internship

CONTRACT: Full Time, Fixed Term (24 Month)

HOURS OF WORK: Such hours as necessary to carry out your duties. This will involve a minimum of 37 hours per week and may include working outside normal office hours at evenings and weekends and on Public Holidays.

LOCATION: The normal place of work is Holme Pierrepoint Nottingham, however the EIS may from time to time require you to travel to and work at other offices.


Work with the performance support team, specifically the S&C coaches, identified NGB staff and Head of Performance Support to improve performance through developing, implementing, and evaluating strength and conditioning programmes that reflect scientific principles as they relate to adaptation, periodisation, peaking, tapering and injury rehabilitation.



  • Work collaboratively with the performance support team to deliver S&C support to coaches and athletes.
  • Deliver to the WCP and Academy Programs:
    • Supervise and ensure a safe working environment
    • Provide coaching input and improve the execution of lifts and movement.
    • When appropriate provide programming and monitoring input, specifically for Academy athletes and over the long-term the World Class Program (WCP).
  • Apply learnings within the training and competition environment through regular coaching, monitoring and when required, programming and planning. Specifically, there will be responsibility to deliver to the academy canoe programme.
  • Work within the governance standards as set out by the EIS and/or governing body for the discipline.


  • Engage in a programme of learning to support technical and non-technical development.
    • Engage in regular mentoring and coaching from both your designated Senior practitioner in the flatwater program and your Technical Lead.
    • Engage in learning opportunities that are specific to your role as part of the wider EIS learning programme.
  • Proactively learn alongside the Performance Support team to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to be able to deliver to elite coaches and athletes.


  • Immerse yourself in the high-performance system to learn from others and contribute your knowledge and experience.
    • Work as part of the wider EIS Strength & Conditioning discipline
    • Engage in regular team meetings (both within Sport and Discipline)
    • Participate in performance projects across the sport or organisation, as appropriate.
    • Capture your learning and use this in your reflective practice.
    • Engage in communities of practice and knowledge networks
