Job Description

Background 

Chance to Shine (CTS) is a national children's charity. We give young people the opportunity to play, learn and develop through cricket. We keep them physically active, teach them vital skills like teamwork, communication and leadership. And above all, they have fun! 

Chance to Shine coaches inspire children, young people and teachers in state schools and in disadvantaged communities through our Street programme. We work with half a million children each year - nearly half of which are girls. 

The Operations team is tasked with creating and implementing high quality programmes in both school and community environments, giving over 500,000 young people the opportunity to play, learn and develop through cricket every year. 

Our Schools programmes aims to inspire children with a brilliant first experience of cricket, develop physical literacy and a love of sport at a crucial age, helps teachers to build confidence and provides a pathway to community sport.  

Our Street programme gives young people who face barriers to play cricket have the opportunity to do so regularly in their community – one where they feel safe and included.

This is an exciting time to be joining the Operations team as our programmes are well established with excellent support from key stakeholders, especially England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Sport England.  

Purpose of the role 

The purpose of the role of Operations Manager is to:

  • Support the effective and efficient running of the CTS Schools and Street Programme in the Midlands region, ensuring plans are executed by Delivery Partners (DPs) and all reporting requirements are upheld in compliance with the Partnership Agreement.  
  • To be the Designated Safeguarding Lead for CTS with responsibility for managing and reporting concerns and for putting into place procedures and policies. 

Key Responsibilities and Relationships

Programme management:
 

·         To be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of CTS Programmes through Delivery Partners. Including the following County Cricket Boards: Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire. Lincolnshire. Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire. Warwickshire and Worcestershire
 

·         To support DPs to deliver their Chance to Shine School and Street plans and maximise the opportunities to deliver CTS outcomes. 
 

·         To ensure DPs report on activity, both financial and KPIs, using the CTS Portal and templates provided, and in accordance with the Partnership Agreement.
 

·         To ensure DPs connect the work they do in Schools and Street, as well as identifying further opportunities for young people to continue their cricket journey.
 

·         To ensure DPs plan effectively for future delivery – including both Schools and Street – giving a positive return on investment.
 

·         To ensure DPs embed Chance to Shine as part of a coherent plan for cricket in their county.
 

·         To coordinate our Chance to Compete regional festivals, providing increased opportunities for young people aged 11-16 to enjoy an adapted format of the game.
 

·         To create an effective way of working and communicating with the ECB Regional teams.
 

·         To support and develop high quality teams in DPs through delivery of individual & regional meetings online and in person, promoting and sharing good practice.
 

·         To ensure charitable investment is well managed and used to achieve agreed outcomes. 
 

Safeguarding:
 

·         To be the Designated Safeguarding Lead for Chance to Shine, ensuring all activity complies with organisational and national guidelines.
 

·         To take the lead role in developing, reviewing and implementing Chance to Shine's safeguarding policies and procedures.
 

·         Receive, record and respond to information from anyone who has concerns about a child or adult who takes part in Chance to Shine's activities.
 

·         Work with other departments to make sure everyone working or volunteering with children, young people or vulnerable adults at Chance to Shine, understands the safeguarding policies and procedures.
 

·         Work closely with the trustee safeguarding lead, Director of Finance & Resources and Chief Executive to ensure they are kept up to date with safeguarding issues and are fully informed of any concerns about organisational safeguarding and child protection practice.
 

·         Attend regular training and keep up to date with new developments in safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults.
 

To contribute to the organisational effectiveness of Chance to Shine through:
 

·         Support for Communications & Digital team to identify best practice to share on social media platforms and impact reports.
 

·         Support the Fundraising team when compiling supporter progress reports for programmes delivery within the Midland Region.
 

·         Support the Impact & Evaluation team in the evaluation of the CTS programmes, including but not limited to liaising with DPs and coaches for Coach and Participant Surveys.
 

Liaise closely with the Chance to Shine Director of Operations, and be prepared to undertake any other duties related to the work of Chance to Shine as required.

Skills, knowledge & personal competencies

·         A shared belief in the power of sport to change the lives of young people 

·         Knowledge of the current issues surrounding inclusion for young people in sport, and how to remove the barriers to participation in physical activity and sport

·         Enthusiasm to embrace Chance to Shine values: Inspiring, ambitious, passionate, inclusive and fun

·         Excellent knowledge, enthusiasm and understanding of the Chance to Shine programme 

·         Good organisation and administrative skills and an ability to forward plan 

·         Self-starter with strong motivation to succeed and ability to work independently in carrying out assigned tasks

·         Good time management skills, able to work to tight deadlines and an ability to work under pressure
·         An ability to spot opportunities to improve efficiencies

Experience & qualifications


Essential

·         Experience of leading safeguarding in a similar organisation, including a current NSPCC qualification or a willingness to undertake specific training

·         Experience of managing stakeholder relationships and delivering good customer service

·         Experience of successful delivery of team objectives by working closely and collaboratively within a team at all levels

·         Good IT skills: knowledge and experience of using MS Office 365 including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

·         Full UK driving license and able and willing to travel throughout the UK 
 

Desirable

·         An understanding of the cricket landscape and operating standards linked to both CTS and ECB

·         Experience of sport for development, delivery of programmes in another sport with a similar vision. 

·         Knowledge and practical experience of financial and reporting systems, in particular the CTS Portal.

About Chance to Shine

Chance to Shine is a national charity that aims to give all children the opportunity to play, learn and develop through cricket. We believe that cricket can help to develop the personal, social and physical skills of the 600,000 children that we work with every year.

Chance to Shine Schools programme has introduced five million state school children to cricket over the last 15 years. 88% of the teachers we surveyed agreed their pupils had developed their teamwork skills through taking part. 72% of the children we surveyed agreed “I feel confident when I play cricket”. 

Chance to Shine Street was set up to reach young people in disadvantaged areas. Street is a fast, fun, free and exciting version of cricket requiring limited equipment. The programme engages more than 5,000 young people each year across 200 projects. 64% of our participants are from the most deprived areas of England and 75% are from ethnically diverse communities.
