Breaking Boundaries is a three-year programme (2018 –2021) funded by Spirit of 2012, supported by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and The Institute of Community Cohesion (Icoco).

We sit down with Taj Butt the new Sporting Equals Activator for the Bradford Breaking Boundaries programme.

  1. How did you get involved in Breaking Boundaries as an Activator?

My organisation was delivering different projects as an associate member and I was constantly in contact with previous activator who happened to be my brother, when he left to take up a full - time job, he asked me to apply and as I had previously worked for the organisation, I was happy to join them again.

  1. What difference do you hope to make as a Breaking Boundaries Activator?

My passion has always been to use the game of Cricket to make a difference to people's lives and particularly in bringing different communities together to explore what we have in common.

  1. What do you think is key to bringing communities together?

Using what we have in common, in this game of Cricket, there is a passion for the game in Yorkshire regardless of whether you're from the communities living in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales or in a typically deprived inner city areas, our role is to bring them together and allow them to express themselves.

  1. What are you most excited about on the Breaking Boundaries programme?

It's particularly satisfying to identify young leaders and watch them as them develop until they are able to become young adults and leaders and coaches able to deliver in their own right.

  1. What's your first sporting memory?

My early sporting memories are watching the FA Cup final on TV and like everyone else I wanted to play in one.

  1. Who is your hero and why?

I've had many over the years but currently it has to be my daughter who is my mentor and inspires me every day.
